UNEP is one of the Lead Agencies (along with UNCRD and WHO) in organizing the Cluster 4 on "Reducing the Underlying Risk Factors" We are responsible for organizing the Cluster
4 Panel Discussion, and in preparing the Discussion Paper for Cluster 4 (PDF).
In emphasizing its key message of linking environment and disasters,
UNEP is organizing a Thematic Session on the theme "Environmental
Management and Disaster Reduction: Building a Multi-Stakeholder Partnership".
A number of high-profile speakers are slated in the session's
agenda (PDF), including Japan's Minister for Environment, Yuriko
Koike, and UNEP's Executive Director, Klaus Toepfer. A background
paper (PDF) has been prepared to guide the proceedings
of the session. The session will be held on 19 January 2005, from 12:00
to
14:00 in the Kitano
Room of Portopia Hotel.
UNEP will be launching a key publication, "Environmental
Management and Disaster preparedness: Lessons Learnt from the Tokage
Typhoon (Typhoon 23 of 2004) in Japan" (PDF) at a Press Conference
to be held on 19 January from 14:30 to 15:30, in the Waraku Room of Portopia
Hotel.
Note: Mr. Muneharu Nakagai, Mayor of Toyo-oka City , which was badly
hit by the typhoon, will be speaking at UNEP Thematic Session (see above
news item)
UNEP has produced a special edition of the "Environment Times" for the WCDR, focusing on the environmental dimensions of disasters.
