Waste Management – Activities

Capacity Building

Training of personnel from partner institutions, experts and policy makers is an integral part of the pilot/demonstrations projects on ISWM and management of specific waste streams.

The following training manuals on "Developing Integrated Solid Waste Management Plans" are available on-line:

The following training manuals on specific waste streams are available on-line:

  • Converting Waste Plastics into a Resource – Assessment Guidelines, Dec 2009 (PDF 678KB) – This document is aimed to raise awareness and assist in the collection and analysis of data to generate a baseline on waste plastics to further develop viable business propositions for converting waste plastics into fuels.

  • E-Waste Vol. 1: Inventory Assessment Manual, Dec 2007 (PDF 1.7MB) – This manual summarizes the available legislations on WEEE/E-waste in different countries and provides a methodology to design and use E-waste inventory assessment studies/projects. Furthermore, E-waste management chain (starting from electrical and electronic equipment manufacture, production, import, consumption, E-waste generation, treatment and disposal) has been discussed to identify the "mechanism of trading" and related socio-economic and environmental risks.

  • E-Waste Vol. 2: E-waste Management Manual, Dec 2007 (PDF 2.2MB) – This manual summarizes the current practices in developed and developing countries on WEEE/E-waste management, the technologies for E-waste management and the important pre-requisites for effective and sustainable WEEE/E-waste management.

IETC makes use of these manuals in project related training. IETC also organizes regional training programmes for policy makers and personnel involved with the subject of waste management. The first regional workshop was held in Bali on "South-South Cooperation on Solid Waste Management" (PDF 10KB), in cooperation with the Division of Environmental Law and Conventions of UNEP, the Government of Indonesia and the Secretariat of Non Aligned Movement. Other regional training workshops on "Integrated Solid Waste Management", "Demonstration Projects for Waste Agricultural Biomass" and "WEEE/E-Waste Management" have also been conducted.

  • Regional Integrated Solid Waste Management Workshops (ISWM) in Africa and Asia Pacific (PDF 65KB)

    • Regional ISWM Training in Africa – UNEP-DTIE-IETC, in cooperation with the Centre for Studies on Sustainable Development of the University of Mauritius, conducted a five-day Regional Training Workshop on Integrated Solid Waste Management in Mauritius from 9-13 March 2009. 21 participants, including 5 from Mauritius, were invited from 12 African countries and from UNEP offices in Nairobi and Bahrain.

    • Regional ISWM Training in Asia Pacific – UNEP-DTIE-IETC, in cooperation with the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) held a four-day Regional Training Workshop on Integrated Solid Waste Management in Osaka (Japan) from 5-8 October 2009.  A total of 12 participants from 9 Asian Pacific Region Countries and from UNEP and UNESCAP Regional office in Bangkok attended the workshop.

  • Regional Agricultural Biomass Workshop − UNEP-DTIE-IETC, in cooperation with the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) held a Regional Workshop on Waste Agricultural Biomass in Osaka, Japan, on 2 – 5 March 2010.

  • Regional WEEE/E-Waste Management Workshop − UNEP-DTIE-IETC, in cooperation with the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) held a Regional Workshop on WEEE/E-Waste Management in Osaka, Japan, on 6 – 9 July 2010.

  • International Expert Group Workshop (PDF 11KB) − UNEP-DTIE-IETC is implementing a project titled, “Converting Waste Plastics into a Resource.”  Under this project an International Expert Group Workshop was held in Osaka, Japan on 15 – 16 June 2009 to discuss technologies for utilizing waste plastics.
