Introducing the Forum
The inaugural UNEP DTIE IETC Expert Meeting on Sustainable Building and Construction
was conducted over two days in December 2002 and assembled key international
partners involved in building and construction, such as planners, architects,
consultants, construction companies, labour organisations, research and development
institutes as well as representatives from key bodies such as ISO, OECD, UN-Habitat
and ILO.
The meeting successfully achieved its objectives of increasing knowledge
of current activities and initiatives and designing modalities of co-operation
between partners to bring about the necessary synergies and actions to promote
sustainable construction, in particular in the developing world. It resulted
in a better understanding of the initiatives taken by the various partners,
and a solid plan of action for these partners.
One of the key recommendations made by the meeting's participants was for
UNEP to support the growing SBC network through international co-ordination.
IETC have therefore created an online forum to link the SBC organisations
represented, to showcase initiatives and to enable communication between partners,
co-ordination of ongoing activities, news dissemination, and direct collaboration.
The framework plan of action, as agreed to at the SBC expert meeting includes
the following activities:
- Establish UNEP SBC Forum
- Survey partners on current SBC initiatives, tools strategies. Survey of
UN system
- Inventory SBC tools
- Inventory SBC indicators - determine project indicators needs
- Produce a publication on SBC
- Establish a portal on information
- Awareness raising and capacity building through conferences in developing
country regions
- Develop work programme for SBC in developing countries (and GEF Proposal)
- Develop country specific Agenda21 for SBC
- Develop and publish professional practice kits for schools and practitioners
(architects, planners)
- Develop a case studies and best practice network.
- Ensure partner participation in ongoing activities (including ISO development
of indicators, Green Building Challenge, procurement.
