The IAB members were briefed of IETC's initiatives in information technology and knowledge management. Presentations were made by IETC's information officer on a range of products and services, particularly maESTroII and EST-IS. Information on IETC's e-learning initiatives, as well as statistics on IETC's website and online publications, were presented.

Information on UNEP's initiative, "Sustainable Alternatives (SANet)" - and the elements that IETC is assisting SANet develop (waste, water and construction), was presented.

Discussion on Item #6

Bakens complemented IETC on the strategic thinking that went into the creation of IETC's various e-products and services. But he cautioned that IETC will have to take into account the manpower needs in maintaining the system in the long run. This has been factored into the design of EST-IS as the responsibility of maintaining the system is with the users. User networks are also being created in parallel, in order to facilitate its effective use.

Zimmerman echoed comments made by Bakens, emphasizing the need for broad-based networking, promotion and coordination, guidance to users etc. to be carried out. These activities are being integrated and complemented by other activities of IETC, for example, through the cooperation centers.

Vassos pointed out that information already collected has also to be taken into account.

Barette congratulated IETC on the significant improvement of maESTro II over the previous version – both in terms of design and content. He commented on IETC's e-learning modules, pointing out that a thorough user analysis needs to be made, collaborate with e-learning consortia etc. This is part of our collaborations with our partners – industry associations, cooperation centers, as well as universities (including the UNU).

Morishima highlighted initiatives of IGES in the field of e-learning (including those developed by partnering with IETC), and pointed out that one of the targets of its initiatives is local governments.

Fujikura congratulated IETC on the development of maESTro II, particularly its categories and decision-support system information. She suggested that technology data entry forms should be made clearer. She called for better integration of databases developed by GEC with those of IETC's. This was welcomed.

Nel pointed out that a majority of cities and local governments in developing countries do not have access to the internet or to email. This is critical, and hence efforts have been made by IETC to ensure that products are not just online, but are available offline, in hardcopy, and through face-to-face training sessions.
