Welcome and Purpose of the meeting |
|
Jacquiline Aloisi de Larderel welcomed the International Advisory
Board members and other participants to the 5th Meeting. She thanked the IAB
members for the leadership and advice that they provided during the previous
years, and commended staff of IETC for their efforts.
She outlined the purpose of the meeting - to advise UNEP on IETC strategy
and activities, assist IETC in delivering its work programme and also review
IETC achievements during the year.
She recalled the context within which the meeting was being organized, including
the UNEP Global Progamme of Action Inter-Governmental Review, which took place
in Montreal, in December 2001 and the World Summit of Sustainable Development
(WSSD), which took place in Johannesburg in September 2002.
She highlighted the key elements that came out of the world summit was 'WEHAB'
covering the areas of Water, Energy, Health, Agriculture & Biodiversity,
as an inter-agency set of prorities. The IETC Work Programme 2003 and beyond
clearly takes this into account.
She also briefed the participants of UNEP's overall structure, as well as
the policies and functions of its various divisions and units, specifically
outlining the mission and role of the UNEP Division of Technology, Industry
and Economics.
She requested the IAB members to introduce themselves to everyone
(Please see Attachment 1 for a list of attendees).
The IAB Meeting's expected outcomes included a review of the 2002 Work Programme,
integration of WSSD outcomes in the 2003 and 2004-5 work programme, advice
on priorities to be adopted, advice on ways and means to deliver work programme
2003 (cost-effectively), and ongoing contribution of IAB members to IETC activities.
