Regional Workshop on WEEE / E-Waste Management in Osaka, Japan, on 6-9 July 2010

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) or E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world due to increasing "market penetration" in developing countries, "replacement market" in developed countries and "high obsolescence rate". In developed countries WEEE/E-Waste equals, on an average, to 1% of the total solid waste.

There is a pressing need to address E-waste management, particularly in developing countries where the presence of valuable recyclable components attracts the informal and unorganised sector. The unsafe and environmentally risky practices adopted by them pose great risks to health and environment.

In view of this situation, International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) in cooperation with the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) organized a regional workshop on Waste Electrical and Electronics Equipment (WEEE) / E-waste to build capacity on WEEE/E-waste and to discuss current challenges.

The first two days of the workshop were devoted for training to government officials from Asia-Pacific region based on the guidelines developed by IETC. On the third day an open workshop was organized inviting all the stakeholders including international organizations (SBC, JICA, Korea Environment Corporation etc.), private sector (Panasonic, Sharp, Canon, Hitachi, Mitsui, Mitsubishi etc.), research community (NIES, JETRO, AIST, Osaka University) and national governments from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam The open workshop provided an opportunity to share information among the stakeholders to promote joint efforts. A field visit to an E-waste recycling facility was carried out on the last day to show E-waste recycling technology to the participants.
