<Planning and Management of Lakes and
Reservoirs: An Integrated Approach to Eutrophication>
CHAPTER 5: ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF EUTROPHICATION
5.1. Introduction
This chapter provides an introduction to the basic concepts required
examination of alternative economic mechanisms that can be used to
minimise the incidence of eutrophication. It is assumed that
eutrophication is an externality associated with the use of water as an
input to production systems. Thus, there are many institutional and
regulatory mechanisms available to manage eutrophication. Section one of
the chapter discusses some of the available mechanisms with section two
providing an information on case studies from around the world. Finally,
tools for the evaluation of costs and benefits of each mechanism are
presented.
