PROFILE

BIOTROP

The Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology is one of the 12 Centres under the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). It is based in Bogor, Java, Indonesia where it was established in 1968. BIOTROP gets financial assistance from the Government of Indonesia and special funds for the implementation of its programme of activities come from the Secretariat (SEAMES) through the contribution of member countries, funding agencies and donations from associated member countries.

All scientific activities are centered on the main areas of tropical biology namely Forest Biology, Pest Biology and Aquatic Biology. All areas of activities within the Programme consider research and training/workshop which are supported by a Clearing House of Information.

All the activities are prepared on the basis of a five-year development plan which is extensively discussed through a series of consultations with scientists, agencies, universities and research institutions at a local and national level. Endorsement by the different countries High Officials and the Council of Ministers (SEAMEC) is followed.

BIOTROP offers technical services and research consultancies at cost through its scientists and research staff on a variety of fields i.e. Coastal Zone Management, Forest Ecology and Management, Weed Identification and Control, Remote Sensing and GIS, etc. while it also has special trainning programmes on remote sensing and photointerpretation, tissue culture and control of insects to name a few.

BIOTROP produces technical publications like monographs and proceedings, maps, etc. Conferences can also be held in the Centre as newly upgraded facilities like auditoriums and dormitories have been recently opened. The Centre also has a large library for references.
