of Alternative Technologies for Freshwater Augumentation in Africa>
3.1 FRESHWATER AUGMENTATION TECHNOLOGIES
Industries traditionally rely on municipal water supply systems
for water used in their operations. In a number of African countries,
municipal supplies are unreliable in terms of both quantity and quality of
water delivered, and are often costly. The current trend in industry,
therefore, is for companies to develop their own water supply system.
These systems are frequently based upon water harvesting from either
surface or ground water sources. The amount of water harvested is entirely
dependent on the need, the amount available, and ability to harvest the
water, which is dependent on the type of technology used. Water is
harvested in all its forms for industrial use notably as rainwater,
groundwater, and surface water.
