4.11.3 Combined sewer overflow

Columbusís combined sewer system had sixteen overflow points into the
Chattahoochee River. The State of Georgia mandated treatment of wet weather
discharges into the river.
Installation of two facilities, each consisting of six Storm King vortex
separation units, for reduction of suspended solids as well as contact vessels
for disinfection. Pilot studies projected annual TSS reductions of 80 percent at
hydraulic loading rates of 5-7 gpm/sq. ft.
