4.11.3 Combined sewer overflow

Plant Name: South Commons and Uptown Park
Location:  Columbus, Georgia
Flow: Two units, each 128 MGD

Problem:

Columbusís combined sewer system had sixteen overflow points into the Chattahoochee River. The State of Georgia mandated treatment of wet weather discharges into the river.

Solution:

Installation of two facilities, each consisting of six Storm King vortex separation units, for reduction of suspended solids as well as contact vessels for disinfection. Pilot studies projected annual TSS reductions of 80 percent at hydraulic loading rates of 5-7 gpm/sq. ft.
