IETC Offers “Train-the-Trainer”
Workshops and EMS Kits for Cities
As part
of the development of a series of “tools” to help city managers and
officials build a framework for enacting various urban environmental strategies
and activities, IETC has developed an Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
Resource Kit. The Kit contains relevant materials and support resources, such as
case studies, check lists and questionnaires, and was primarily designed for
city managers and officials to use in the design, implementation and operation
of EMS for their own cities. It has also been recognized, however, that an
integral part of the EMS process is the training of city staff responsible for
successful establishment and maintenance of EMS. Thus, the Kit has been designed
to reflect this requirement: It is a “training” resource.
Recognizing the need to train persons who will be responsible for cities’
EMS, IETC has also undertaken a series of workshops to “train-the-trainers.”
These efforts are increasing the number of persons who can act as trainers
within their own cities or train others who will be responsible for establishing
EMS. The workshops (held this past spring in Hungary and Singapore, in March and
May respectively) form the initial phase of IETC’s urban environmental
management training programme. The training programme will be offered globally,
on a regional basis, as well as within specific countries should there be
sufficient demand. For 2002, other courses are planned (in addition to EMS for
Cities), such as:
- Environmental Auditing
- Integrated Waste Management (several modules)
- Energy Efficiency and Management
- Waste for Cities (several modules)
Other relevant courses will be developed and delivered on a demand basis
(subject to sufficient resources and partners being available).
If you have any suggestions or specific training needs, please contact

“WASTE 2001: The Middle East Congress & Exhibition for
Recycling and Waste Management” was held in Cairo, Egypt, on 28
Feb.-2 Mar., co-sponsored by IETC. IETC’s Deputy Director gave an
opening speech and made a presentation on “Waste in the 21st
Century: Challenges for Cities.” IETC also displayed its
