INSIGHT, May '01 Edition
Photo Exhibition
Marks World
Environment Day
This year, the International
Environmental Technology Centre hosts a one-week photo exhibition to celebrate
UNEP World Environment Day, 5 June. The exhibition will bring together
outstanding photographs of water and the environment in Shiga Prefecture,
including scenes of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, waterfowl and vegetation, among
other themes related to the water cycle. Photographs have been selected from the
Shiga Prefecture Government’s annual BIWAKO photo contest collections, as well
as from the collections of environment-related NGOs and amateur and professional
photographers.
The exhibition, “Waterscape,” will run from 2 through 9 June 2001. It is
jointly sponsored by the International Lake Environment Committee Foundation (ILEC),
the Ohmi Environment Conservation Foundation, and IETC. While enjoying the
beauty of these photos taken by keen-eyed photographers and nature lovers,
visitors will also become more aware of the need to preserve the quality and
quantity of this most precious element, water, and of the role UNEP is playing
in the care of our planet Earth.

World Environment Day 2001
In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly established World Environment
Day to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human
Environment. This year’s theme, “Connect with the World Wide Web of
Life,” reflects the need for all of us to, in whatever way we can, make
the connection between ourselves and all life on Earth.
