6th International Conference on the Conservation and Management of
Lakes
The 6th International Conference on the Conservation and Management of
Lakes was held on from 23 till 27 October 1995, on the shores of the
Kasumigaura Lake, in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The theme of this
year's conference was "Harmonizing Human Life with Lakes: towards the
sustainable use of lakes and reservoirs." Around 8,203 participants
(among them 421 foreigners from 75 countries) attended this major event.
Dr. Richard A. Meganck, Director IETC, delivered an introductory address
on behalf of the UNEP Executive Director at the opening ceremony. In
addition to the financial support provided by the UNEP Freshwater Unit to
the conference, IETC played an active role during the gathering. Dr. Habib
N. El-Habr co-chaired one session on International Linkages and delivered
a presentation on IETC's work in the field of lakes/reservoirs management
technologies. He took part in a panel discussion on Integrated Lake
Management and in a session on the Role of International Organizations
organized jointly by UNEP and the World Bank.
The Kasumigaura Declaration, presented and adopted at the closing
ceremony, appeals for a better integrated lake management approach; calls
for the promotion of real partnerships, knowledge, education and
technology transfer; highlights the environmental impact of development;
and, raises the aim of preserving biodiversity.
