6th International Conference on the Conservation and Management of Lakes

The 6th International Conference on the Conservation and Management of Lakes was held on from 23 till 27 October 1995, on the shores of the Kasumigaura Lake, in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The theme of this year's conference was "Harmonizing Human Life with Lakes: towards the sustainable use of lakes and reservoirs." Around 8,203 participants (among them 421 foreigners from 75 countries) attended this major event. Dr. Richard A. Meganck, Director IETC, delivered an introductory address on behalf of the UNEP Executive Director at the opening ceremony. In addition to the financial support provided by the UNEP Freshwater Unit to the conference, IETC played an active role during the gathering. Dr. Habib N. El-Habr co-chaired one session on International Linkages and delivered a presentation on IETC's work in the field of lakes/reservoirs management technologies. He took part in a panel discussion on Integrated Lake Management and in a session on the Role of International Organizations organized jointly by UNEP and the World Bank.

The Kasumigaura Declaration, presented and adopted at the closing ceremony, appeals for a better integrated lake management approach; calls for the promotion of real partnerships, knowledge, education and technology transfer; highlights the environmental impact of development; and, raises the aim of preserving biodiversity.
