On invitation of the Secretariat of the Basel Convention (SBC) on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, IETC participated in meetings on the establishment of regional centres for training and technology transfer regarding the management of hazardous wastes. Richard Meganck, Director of IETC, attended a "Meeting for the promotion of the ratification of the Basel Convention and to prepare for the establishment of the Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer on the environmentally sound management of hazardous waste", held in Brits, South Africa, from 22-26 July 1996.

Christian Holger Strohmann, IETC Coordinator of Information and Training, contributed to the first Asian-Pacific regional meeting on this subject in Beijing, China, 9-11 July 1996. Following the three major thrusts of IETC - improving access to information on ESTs, fostering technology cooperation, and capacity building - the Centre's representatives offered to cooperate with the SBC and future regional technology transfer and training centres. Joint activities were suggested such as compiling an international source book on ESTs for management of hazardous waste, adding the mitigation of hazardous waste problems to Sustainable Cities Projects, and developing pilot training programmes on various aspects of hazardous waste management.
