Earthquake Waste Symposium Osaka, 12-13 June 1995 - Proceedings
In the aftermath of Japan's Hanshin Earthquake, a symposium examined issues related to the management of large quantities of demolition waste generated by natural disasters. The proceedings of this symposium - organised by the Japan Waste Management Consultant Association (JWMCA) and co-sponsored by IETC and ISWA - include presentations by six experts from around the world as well as technical recommendations.

Environmental Risk Assessment for Sustainable Cities
This paper outlines the benefits of using the Environmental Risk Assessment Technology (EnRA) as an organizing tool in the UNCHS (Habitat) Sustainable Cities Programme (SCP) strategic planning process. The paper details the conceptual foundations and current practices of EnRA approaches (vis-à-vis human health and ecological assessments). Specific attention is given to characterizing the iterative steps required to produce valid qualitative and quantitative predictions of risk; explaining information requirements and uncertainty estimates; providing the means required to communicate risk information to technical and non-technical audiences; and, drawing links between economic development, capacity building and replicability of strategic planning efforts embodied in the SCP and EnRA processes.

Forum on the Caspian, Aral and Dead Sea/Symposium on the Aral Sea and the Surrounding Region - Proceedings
On 28 March 1995, UNEP IETC organized a Forum on the Caspian, Aral and Dead Seas providing prospectives on water environment management and politics. The forum was held in collaboration with the International Lake Environment Committee Foundation (ILEC), the Lake Biwa Research Institute (LBRI), the United Nations University (UNU), the UNEP Freshwater Unit, and the Japan Research Association of Kazakhstan (JRAK). A symposium on the Aral Sea and surrounding region, focusing on irrigated agriculture and the environment, was also held on 29 March 1995. The proceedings of both events, including edited versions of presented papers, are covered in this publication.
