maESTro Gets More Accessible
On 1 March 1998, maESTro became easier to access. maESTro is a software
tool that has been increasingly in demand among those exchanging
information on Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs). In response to
maESTro users' requests, IETC has decided to further develop maESTro so
that information in this tool that can be disseminated on floppy disks,
CD-ROMs and in report formats, is also now available on the Internet--the
world's most "fashionable" method of searching for information
nowadays. The newly developed web-based maESTro can be found at the EST
Directory on IETC's homepage: .
The newly developed web-maESTro enables all internet browsers to log in
for free anytime in search of environmental information and/or browse the
latest data in a timely and direct fashion. Web-maESTro records the last
visit of every log-in user and will highlight all new/updated information
upon the user's next visit. Therefore, users can easily follow up on the
latest information. In the future, users will be able to log in and modify
information they have contributed to maESTro. Automatic reports will also
be downloadable.
Since 1996, maESTro has been honored to partner with numerous government
ministries, including the Ministry of Environment in New Zealand, the
Ministry of Nature & Environment in Mongolia, the Ministry of
Environmental Protection in Lithuania, the Ministry of Environment &
Forests in India, the Ministry of Housing, Municipality & Environment
in Bahrain, the Ministry of Environment in Lebanon, the Ministry of Energy
& Mines in Eritrea, and the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of
Korea. Recently, maESTro was introduced on the homepage of the Korean
Ministry of Environment in order to enhance the accessibility of
environmental information for Koreans.
At this stage, efforts are focused on negotiating with potential
environmental information contributors in both the public and private
sector to develop the exchange of EST-related information. Among the
numerous contributors to maESTro have been UNIDO in Austria and GEC
(Global Environment Centre Foundation) in Japan. Furthermore, information
contributed by NEPA (National Environmental Protection Agency) in the
People's Republic of China and GETF (Global Environmental & Technology
Foundation) in the USA is undergoing conversion to be incorporated into
the EST Directory.
The essential purpose of maESTro is to compile EST-related information
and bring this information to all nations, regardless of their levels of
development, political systems, or social values. With improved
capability, maESTro will help us with our mission to help humankind.
