Fruit Borne From IETC's Regional Training

Following an IETC training programme on adoption, application and operation of Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs), a national workshop was held in Yangon, Myanmar, from 21 January to 3 February 1998. The IETC programme was conducted in cooperation with the Institute for Environmental Science, Murdoch University, Australia, and was held in conjunction with an International Regional Conference on Technology for Waste Water Management that took place in early December 1997.

The Yangon workshop, "Urban Environmental Planning and Management for Myanmar," was organized by the National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA), the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), and the Asian Development Bank. After participating in the Murdoch workshop, Mr. U Tun Than Tun, Head of the City Planning & Land Administration Department, Yangon City Development Office, took the initiative as Project Manager to coordinate the Myanmar workshop. "Actually, this training course became more meaningful after adding the knowledge which I enhanced in 'Adopting, Applying, Operating Environmentally Sound Technologies for Urban Management' (the Murdoch workshop)," Mr. Tun said.

During the Yangon workshop, about twenty trainees attended sessions on urban environmental planning and management, including department heads, officials of NCEA and YCDC, resident representatives of UN agencies and others.
