Background

More resources are utilized in the world's cities, more pollution has been generated.  If capacity of replenishing or substituting for used resources is eroded, or if pollution is generated faster than it can be assimilated, the critical environmental and economic damage will occur in the urban system.  Given these issues and challenges that cities face, The IETC "Cities As Sustainable Ecosystems" (CASE) provides with guidance for identifying and solutions for the issues and problems to create a sustainable development.

Conceptual Framework

CASE is the objective, multidisciplinary study of urban and economic systems based on the integration of scientific, technological, environmental and management disciplines.

Conclusion

It is necessary to propose a new intellectual framework for the development of a sustainable future.  With support and cooperation with all different sectors -- government, industry, public groups and academia at the national as well as global levels, CASE will be able to lead to the achievement of a sustainable urban system.
