Cooperation with UNESCO

reed Marsh Arab houseUNESCO encourages the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world. UNESCO has been working in Iraq in the field of education, culture, natural sciences and communication and information. It is also a resident agency in the UN Country Team in Iraq, located in Amman, Jordan. In the cultural sector, UNESCO has been addressing the safeguarding the Iraqi heritage, and has worked closely with the Ministry of Culture and other agencies to support cultural management in Iraq. The Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO has been leading the water resources management issues including the international trans-boundary water issues of the Tigris-Euphrates, which is to be addressed to secure a certain amount of water for the long-term preservation of the Marshlands.  The project also liaises closely with the World Heritage Centre of UNESCO, which is responsible for overseeing the overall World Heritage Programme.  UNESCO thus brings added value to realize the sustainable development of the Marshlands and to raise the awareness of the importance of the Marshlands to the international community through the World Heritage scheme.
