UNEP in the play- offs
Nagoya Dome, Nagoya, Japan
22 Oct. 2010
Taking advantage of the COP10 in Nagoya, Japan, UNEP's International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC), with offices in Osaka and Shiga, managed to secure an invitation for a senior UNEP official to throw the opening pitch in the professional baseball play-off game between Chunichi Dragons and Yomiuri Giants in the Nagoya Dome baseball stadium on 22 October 2010.
The game was watched by more than 40,000 enthusiastic fans in the stadium and many more on national TV. Mr. Nick Nuttall, the Spokesperson for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), walked up to the mound, threw the first ball and had himself introduced as follows: "Mr. Nick Nuttall is going to throw the first ball tonight. He is the Spokesperson for the United Nations Environment (UNEP) attending COP10 in Nagoya, coming from Kenya. Thousands of people are here in Nagoya because they are really worried about the future of life on Earth. Right this second, however, he is more worried about pitching the ball."
