Interactive Fair for Biodiversity
Exhibition "Nature in Iraq"

23-29 October 2010, Adjacent to COP10 venue

CPD COP10 UNEP and the Iraqi Ministry of Environment co-organized exhibitions in the Interactive Fair for Biodiversity from 23 to 29 October 2010. The Fair was an open event of the CBD COP10, participated by over 200 worldwide exhibitors and attended by a wide range of visitors totaling 118,647 as a whole.

The objective of the exhibition was to familiarize visitors with the significance of biological diversity in Iraq. The booth was decorated with photo posters illustrating diverse landscapes in Iraq and their habitats, paintings by both Iraqi painters and children with a theme of environmental conservation. Traditional handcrafts collected from Northern to Southern Iraq were displayed.

The exhibition booth was inaugurated by Mr. Ahmed Djoghlaf, the Executive Secretary of CBD and Dr. Ali Al-Lami, Advisor to the Minister of Environment, Iraq. Manning staff of the booth welcomed visitors in Iraqi ethnic clothing on the first day. The exhibition received a wide range of visitors including COP10 participants, a large number of Japanese public visitors and the media throughout the one-week exhibition period. Visitors were provided with comprehensive explanation in both English and Japanese on diverse nature environmental issues in Iraq and UNEP’s initiatives for the Iraqi Marshlands. It was the first opportunity for most of visitors to know about positive facts on Iraq such as Iraq’s rich biodiversity as well as many kinds of traditional handcrafts brought from the Northern Iraq (Kurdistan) and the Marshlands. Information materials on the exhibition and UNEP projects in the Iraqi Marshlands were also distributed to the visitors. The exhibition also received a courtesy visit of Ms. Tokiko Kato, the Special Envoy of UNEP on the closing day. Dr. Ali Al-Lami and Dr. Fauzi Rashid Ali, Ministry of Sciences and Technology, Iraq explained the exhibition to Ms. Kato and expressed gratitude to her visit and interests on the Iraqi Marshlands issues.

The event was successful to raise public awareness to change the public image on Iraq, which is often linked to desert, oil and violence. Visitors were also well informed about achievements by UNEP initiatives in the Iraqi Marshlands funded by the Japanese and Italian Governments, attracting Japanese media’s attention on the occasion of CBD COP10.
